Evaluation of Stream Gauge Density and Implementing the Concept of Virtual Gauges in Northern Ontario for Watershed Modeling

A balanced stream gauge network design is required to establish scientifically defensible baseline hydrological conditions for simulating future responses to changes in climate and land use practices. In a recent study by Elizabeth Philip and Jim McLaughlin, from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, the Water Survey of Canada’s HYDAT stream gauge density was evaluated, and virtual stream gauge implementation was examined conceptually.
