PCSWMM/EPA SWMM5 Workshop in South Africa

Overview

This set of PCSWMM and EPA SWMM5 workshops focuses on getting both new and experienced modelers up to speed on the full capabilities of these two integrated software packages. Learn the theory, time-saving tools and practical hands-on applications of hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for stormwater, wastewater and watershed systems, with special emphasis on system design, system remediation, green infrastructure (LIDs), integrated 1D-2D and flood modeling. You can register for the full 3-day workshop, the 2-Day (Introduction and Intermediate) or just the 1-day advanced workshop on integrated 1D-2D modelling.

PCSWMM will be used throughout the workshop to speed learning and program execution, and to enhance the understanding of the underlying EPA SWMM5 processes. Participants will develop the necessary skill and confidence to explore and apply the official EPA SWMM5 hydrology/hydraulics engine effectively.

Agenda

Day 1 (Beginner)

Designed with the beginner in mind, Day 1 focuses on introducing the theory, concepts and tools available for EPA SWMM5 modeling using PCSWMM. Lectures are interspersed with real-world hands-on exercises, with plenty of time for one-on-one interaction with the instructors.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

SWMM5 hydrology and hydraulics, building a new stormwater/sanitary model from scratch, hydrologic parameterization, storage facility design, dual drainage system design and GIS data integration. As well as Design storm system analysis, continuous water quality simulations and introduction to climate change modelling.

Day 2 (Intermediate/advanced)

Day 2 focuses on progressing your existing skills and diving deeper into the capabilities of EPA SWMM and PCSWMM. We explore green infrastructure (LIDs, SuDS) and water quality modeling, as well as stormwater reuse and natural system modeling.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

New green infrastructure modelling capabilities, including green roofs, bio-retention, permeable pavement, rain barrels, infiltration trenches, rain gardens, vegetative swales and rooftop disconnection. Pollutant buildup and washoff for continuous modelling, sizing stormwater ponds for treatment, modelling stormwater reuse with control rules, and erosion analysis.

Day 3 (Advanced 1D-2D)

Day 3 focuses on intermediate and advanced level topics with emphasis on integrated 1D-2D model development and results interpretation for urban flood analysis.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

Topics included on this day are semi-automatic sensitivity, calibration and error analysis, watershed discretization and parameterization, importing HEC-RAS data sets for watershed flood analysis, and output analysis and inference. We highly recommended that you have already participated in a PCSWMM workshop (Day 1) or taken our online workshop.

What to Bring

Bring a 15" or greater laptop computer with the following specifications and installed software:

PCSWMM Professional 2D (60-day workshop license)

We will supply a link to download software one week before the workshop. You must download, install, and activate the latest version of the software prior to the workshop. Please notify us if you have problems with installation or activation.
Administrative rights to install/remove software

Hands-on exercises and potentially other software (e.g. PCSWMM update) will be installed during the workshops on your laptop. Please ensure you have such rights or know the administrator's log-in procedures.
A usable USB port

Training files are supplied on USB key at the workshop. Please ensure your laptop's USB port (type A) has not been blocked for security purposes.

Minimum physical memory: 4 GB
Minimum free disk space: 20 GB
Minimum screen resolution: 1600 x 900 pixels

We strongly recommend a 15" or larger screen, with a resolution between 1600x900 pixels and 1920x1200 pixels and text size set to 100%. This will enable the exercise instructions and the software to be displayed on the screen side-by-side.

Instructors

This workshop will be led by one or more of the following instructors:

CHRIS BROOKER, B.Sc.(Eng), M.Sc.(Eng), PrEng.

Chris has been a consulting engineer specializing in environmental water related subjects and hydraulic structures since 1982. In 2001 he opened a practice in South Africa offering specialist consulting services mainly to other consulting engineers. He is an external examiner and Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The University of the Witwatersrand, and occasional external examiner and visiting lecturer in the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pretoria. Chris has authored numerous journal papers and conference presentations.

ONNO FORTUIN, B.Eng., GDE, PrEng.

Onno is a consulting engineer with over 20 years experience implementing mining projects throughout South Africa. In 2008, Mr. Fortuin opened a practice providing consulting services with a focus on environmental and surface water engineering. Since then he has had the opportunity to apply PCSWMM and EPA SWMM5 in a wide variety of advanced mine surface water modelling applications. Mr. Fortuin is a member of the Engineering Council of SA and the SA institution of Civil Engineering.

ROBERT FORTUIN, B.Eng., EIT.

Robert graduated with distinctions from the University of Stellenboch, Western Cape in 2013 and is currently employed with Onno Fortuin Consulting as a consultant specializing in mining and environmental engineering. Robert has been working with PCSWMM for the past three years and has assisted in a wide range of modeling applications including mining projects, waste water treatment design, integrated SWMP models, dam design and feasibility studies.

Cancellation Policy

YES, I have read the cancellation policy below.

Cancellations prior to 14 calendar days before the workshop will be refunded in full. Cancellations received within 14 days but prior to 7 calendar days before the workshop will forfeit 50% of the registration fee. Cancellations received less than 7 days before the workshop will not be refunded; however, registrants will be eligible for a 50% credit towards any future workshop.

CHI retains the right to cancel the workshop. If the workshop is canceled registrants will receive a full refund of the registration fee. CHI will not be liable for any other expenses occurred by the registrant. Normally, cancellation will not occur within 7 days of the date of the workshop.
